Seeing Muslim women wearing hijabs and attempting to overthrow their governments over the past few weeks challenges a lot of preconceived notions about women in Islam. I bet it would also be news for most to learn that the President of theIslamic Society of North America (ISNA) is a woman.

vintageblackglamour:

Honestly, I would say that my greatest success would be taking the very first gig I ever did. I am a bit of a perfectionist and I like to be super-prepared, and it came up last minute and I was freaking out but I didn’t want the opportunity to pass me by. So I went and flew by the seat of my pants and it wasn’t perfect but it started me on a road that I’ve had a lot of fun with. And had I not thrown caution into the wind then and there, I might not ever have done it.

My best friend Lili held...

Secrets of Inspiring Women – Pictory

My best friend Lili held this sign for me when I ran the NYC Marathon, my first. I’d had a tough year, but Lili had lived through a nearly impossible one. She gave birth to premature twins after a month of bed rest and other complications. While the babies were in intensive care and she was recovering, she learned her husband had been unfaithful throughout her pregnancy, the birth, and recovery period. The marriage imploded, but the babies grew strong, Lili adjusted, and found a way forward.

“You’re going to be an astronaut” is a quote from Brendan (our other best friend) who first said this to me the day after a highly unlikely success with a documentary film shoot: “Well, kid. I think you did it! I think you’re going to be an astronaut!” Really, it’s about surviving in the face of adversity, and arriving at an exceptional success because you refused to give up. And while maybe that applies to a first time marathon runner or a film shoot, it’s more applicable when I think of what Lili did that year and continues to do today.

Cira Robinson, 24

My school was in downtown Cincinnati. It was a good school, but in a rough neighbourhood. There were a couple of other black ballet students at the start, but over the years they all moved to contemporary dance. I was the only one left, always the darkest girl in class, so there was insecurity there. But I’ve learned to say screw it, let me show you what I can do, then you decide whether or not I should be there.

Eating disorders are always around in ballet, and I understand how it is to dance all day and not feel hungry. I know I’m small now, but it’s our workload. We dance hard, the pieces are very physical. I feel happier when I go home in the summer and gain a little bit of weight.

I don’t know much about her either but I’m hoping to learn and I hope she is a great leader for the beautiful country of Brazil.

thesmithian:

Brazil elects first woman President—Dilma Rousseff. I don’t know that much about her. But:

Speaking at a victory rally in the capital, Brasilia, Rousseff told jubilant supporters: “We cannot rest while Brazilians are going hungry, while families are living in the streets, while poor children are abandoned to their own fates and while crack and crack dens rule…The eradication of extreme poverty is a target that I assume and I humbly ask for the support of you all to help the country overcome this abyss that still separates us from being a developed nation,” she added. “This ambitious goal will not be achieved by the government alone. It is a call for the nation.”

And she “pledges gender equality.” Also? it seems she

was once one of most Brazil’s most wanted fugitives, branded by some as a “subversive Joan of Arc.”
